Voting Rights to Overseas Electors of India

Under section 20A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, every overseas elector of India, who is a citizen of India, has not acquired the citizenship of another country and who has attained the age of 18 years on the qualifying date i.e. first day of January of the year of revision of electoral roll, unless otherwise disqualified, is entitled to have his/her name registered in the Electoral Rolls of his/her constituency in which his/her place of residence in India as mentioned in his/her passport is located.

2. For enrolment in the electoral rolls of India, an oversea elector is required to file an application in Form 6-A before the Electoral Registration Officer of his/her constituency in India.

4. It may be noted that there is no provision of voting by post or voting at an Indian Mission abroad or voting on line.  Overseas electors, holding Indian passports whose names are registered in the Electoral Rolls have to be physically present in their constituency in India to exercise their franchise.
